Join CCV members, volunteers and friends for a very informative online program about why and how we should recycle, presented by Dena Houston. Dena is a City of Austin Recycling Block Leader, a volunteer position that she has held for 28 years. For over six years, she has authored a recycling column called “Lettuce Recycle” that appears monthly in various neighborhood newsletters and magazines around Austin.
Before curbside recycling was available in Austin, Dena organized a neighborhood project to collect recyclable paper, and called the project "Lettuce Recycle". She and her neighbors saved paper to take to a private recycling company. They filled up a huge Toyota van and went to collect their wealth and save the planet, planning to take all the money they earned and throw a neighborhood party. After weighing and unloading the van, they were handed $1.30, still resolving to do their best to save the planet.
Recycling education is Dena's goal because the subject can be very confusing. With her articles, she hopes to take some of the confusion out of recycling and help Austin reach its Zero Waste goal by 2040.
