The City Council and its role in Austin’s government and administration. Ho-hum……really, truly boring stuff, right?
Well, maybe…..unless of course you may be interested in who manages our city on a daily basis and how she/he is hired….how our streets are maintained…..who runs our police force (and how well).….the design and oversight of our local electoral system, including what issues make it onto the ballot…..how much the city spends, on what, and how much this will cost you personally every year…..how well our local utilities are regulated and run.….how land development takes place and whether there’s a giant new multi-family home coming soon to the lot next to yours…..and on and on.
So, really NOT boring at all. Rather, city government is complex, fast-moving and directly affects the quality of all of our lives, every day.
This month our joint, virtual lunch will focus on some of these issues. We’re very fortunate to have as our presenter Ryan Autullo, the City of Austin Government Reporter for the Austin Statesman who sees the action up close and personal, every working day.
Ryan will talk to us about how the City Council works (or not). He’ll give us some insights into just how the political sausage gets made in Austin……the influence of different ideological factions on Council decisions…..the top issues of concern he sees the Council addressing in 2022…..and the importance of the new Council District map on our local legislative process.
Right…..NOT really such boring stuff after all, but rather the bread-and-butter issues which affect our lives every day. So come on, folks, put Wednesday, January 19th at 12 noon on your calendars and let’s all get the New Year started with an interesting discussion!
