At December's Bring Your Own Lunch, Megan Biesele will discuss the memoir she published last year about her first anthropological fieldwork over fifty years ago in Botswana. She lived for 18 months with hunting and gathering Ju|hoan (!Kung) click-language speakers in a remotearea of the Kalahari Desert. I was collecting Ju|hoan myths and studying their religious healing dance for her Ph.D. She found treasure trove of vividly detailed learning experiences and nightly ponderings. This seemed of rare value at this time of renewed attention to the wisdom of indigenous societies. Her book on this experience tittled, "Once Upon a Time is Now," underscores the relevance of ancient stories and ritual practices to the present day.
